Touchscreens and Media Servers - The New Standard in Home En

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Home entertainment systems have come a long way since you ooh’ ed and ahh’ed because your neighbor had a few pairs of speakers that actually fit flush into his walls. That’s old news now. Even homes in comparatively modest new developments are being outfitted with a full complement of audio, network, TV and telephone wiring. In many developments the builder offers a standard wiring package and various upgrades for additional wiring, speakers, wiring enclosures and even full control systems.

Systems have evolved to include sleek, wall-mounted touch screens that allow simple access to your music and other house functions such as security, lighting, HVAC, and motorized window treatments. A talented programmer can make these systems function with true “one touch” simplicity. It’s almost as if they’re reading your mind.

The touch screen’s advantage is that it can change the control interface to only show what you need at any one time. This affords tremendous flexibility while retaining the simplicity people desire. The touch screen interface is extremely powerful when combined with another technology that has come into prominence recently; the hard disc based media server. Your CDs are downloaded, or ripped, onto a hard drive. This combination allows your entire music catalog to be displayed on the touch screen for easy searching. You can typically search by artist, song title, genre, or album. Once the desired selection is located, you just touch it on the screen and it begins to play.

These hard drive servers use computer hard drives and modern compression techniques to store phenomenal amounts of music in a simple audio component less than half the size of a 200 disc CD changer. They function just like a typical CD player, not your computer, so they are reliable and easy to use.

Media servers have exploded in popularity recently because of the enormous popularity of compressed music formats such as MP3 and the fantastic array of functionality a disc based system allows. For those who have, or do, own CD mega changers, a hard drive music server will be like a breath of fresh air.

Access to any song is typically less than a second away. Contrast that to selecting disc 94 in your 300-disc CD changer when you are playing disc 201. With a multi-room audio system, you may be on the other side of your house trying to do this with a keypad or remote control. The wait for your changer to return the disc it was playing then trundle the carousel around to your desired disc can seem like an eternity.

Another advantage is easy cataloging. Most hard drive systems will recognize any CD you insert for ripping and if they don’t, they are connected to the internet for access to a giant database. This they access automatically to gather artist, album and track information. Gone are the days of using a keyboard or remote to tediously enter the information about your CDs into a CD changer. You can also stop worrying about which slot your discs are in. “Let’s see, was Led Zeppelin IV in slot 90 or 190?” Using a hard drive server frees up your CDs for use elsewhere such as your car, boat or vacation home.

In addition, since your CDs are not locked up in a changer, your collection is able to be enjoyed by many members of the family at once. With a changer, if someone is listening to it, all of the discs inside it are basically off limits. With a changer, not only are your CDs free for use in other locations but many hard drive servers provide multiple audio outputs.

Multiple outputs enable you to listen to different discs in different areas of the house if your system is so configured. For example, one person could be listening to Korn in the rec room while Bach’s Requiem is being played in the kitchen and Dire Straights in the bedroom. With a conventional CD changer, this is impossible.

You can also buy and store music from many online music services and store those on your hard drive server. Hard drive servers offer advantages over music files stored on a computer as well. Because they function like a traditional audio component, they are easier to use for many people. It is also easier to integrate them with touch screen based home control systems. This will begin to change as the popularity of multimedia PCs such as those running Microsoft XP Media Center Edition 2005 increases.

These units are many steps closer to delivering the long promised “convergence” between consumer electronics and computers. Multimedia PCs, also known as HTPCs [Home Theater PC] function as DVD players, personal video recorders (similar to a TiVO), and hard drive media storage.

They allow storage of digital photos for easy display on your TV or monitor. HTPCs can, of course, browse the net on your TV via your broadband connection. As hard drive storage becomes more economical and compression techniques become better, the storage of HD movies and HDTV programming will become commonplace.

Soon these types of servers and interfaces will become the norm rather than the exception. You’ll think nothing of the amazing array of features offered and the ability to easily access your media collection throughout your home. Once a rarity, media servers, in one form or another, will be found in almost every home.

Graduation Diplomas

Friday, October 24th, 2008

A Short History

Why do we use graduation diplomas? What do they signify and when did we start using them?

Graduation diplomas today are made of paper and are a testament that a person has graduated either from grammar school, high school, college or post college courses. Graduation diplomas for high school are a general education degree. There is no specialty when it comes to a high school education. College diplomas, however, vary. A college diploma can be attained for different subjects and levels of education.

A diploma today is the piece of paper that signifies the degree that a person earns. It is a written award that can be framed or kept in a leather binder. Many years ago, diplomas used to be made of sheepskin. Diplomas made of sheepskin were very difficult to make. They were quite rare, however, as most people in the time of sheepskin diplomas, and did not even know how to read or write.

Earning a college degree today is still, in slang, called “getting a sheepskin.” This refers to hundreds of years ago when a higher level of education was awarded with diploma made of sheepskin.

One Person’s Cross May Be Another Person’s Salvation - Part

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Your genetic makeup, personal history, and particular preferences and abilities help dictate not only how you view the world, but also what experiences may cause you concern. Some people take so much time thinking about an event that they may never act, while others confuse activity with productivity. We have all watched bathers enter a swimming pool. One person will stand on the edge for so long, deciding whether or not to jump or dive that the sun disappears and it becomes too cold to take the plunge. Another stands on the edge, splashes water on him self and slowly sinks into the shallow end. Yet another personality type strides to the pool’s edge and, without noticing the water’s depth or even whether someone is in the way, jumps right in. She might energetically do laps or suddenly remember that she cannot swim. What is a normal life event for one person can send another “over the edge.”

Sometimes an ordinary event feels like a crisis and you “fall apart at the seams.” Your parent, friends, children or spouse looks at you as if you really have “gone crazy” because the same event holds no significant meaning for them. This difference is particularly true between women and men. There is some truth to the cliché that women feel first and fix a problem second, while men solve the problem without discussion. If a man keeps fixing when a woman wants to talk, she tends to find another, bigger problem to talk about. He fixes this one too. She explodes. He feels awful, as all he wanted to do was help. Or in the reverse situation, he wants to solve his issues alone and can’t understand why she is “bugging” him. Reacting differently is not necessarily a problem. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to consider whether you are simply listening to your own drum or whether you are not hearing a different rhythm. One can always benefit from learning new ways of coping.

Mercerization Process Produces Quality Fabrics

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

If you have ever purchased a 100% cotton shirt before you know there are often problems associated with this fabric. The colors fade and become dull, the fabric shrinks, and after a few times of wearing and washing you can see millions of little fuzzies over the surface of your shirts. The process of Mercerization makes all these little annoyances go away.

Single Mercerization is a process in which the yarn used to make a shirt is run through the middle of an open flame at a very high speed. It passes through so quickly that the yarn itself doesn’t burn but the millions of fuzzies and slubs on the yarn are eliminated instantly. This makes the yarn stronger. Since there is no fuzz on the yarn, it is held together better and can no longer unravel by itself. The yarn is also less prone to shrinking because the mercerization process literally pre-shrinks the fabric. Mercerization also cleans the yarn and gives it a strong affinity for dye. While normal cotton yarn has no clarity or depth to it’s color, Mercerized yarn accepts the dye much better and the colors come out deeper, sharper and have a very clean look. The fabric now looks and feels ten times better. Single Mercerization is a huge step up from the quality of regular cotton shirts but Double Mercerization takes it even a step further.

During the knitting process some fuzzies will ultimately resurface. In Double Mercerization the knitted fabric undergoes a second Mercerization process to remove these. The fabric is placed in a chemical bath using caustic soda to once again remove any additional fuzzies or slubs and is then washed clean. This makes the fabric even stronger and makes it look and feel even better. It has a luster and sheen that is unmatched. Double mercerized fabric feels so soft and smooth its look and feel can easily be mistaken for silk.

Incentives for Proper Home Theater Lighting

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

One of the most crucial elements to consider in building a home theater system is also one of the most over-looked. The lighting used in the room has an incredible effect on the movie viewing experience. It can make the difference between a pleasurable experience and a mediocre one.

Better Viewing Environment
Believe it or not, complete darkness is not the best way to watch movies. This is in complete contrast to what most people actually do. You can even see this in practice at many movie theaters; the lights along the sides of the theater are kept very dim during the film but they are still on. The dim lighting helps to prevent the eye fatigue that results from staring at a bright light source in complete darkness. If you have ever had a headache after watching a long movie, it may have been caused by eye fatigue.

Atmosphere
Lighting creates a certain atmosphere inside a room. This is true whether or not the atmosphere created is one that you had intended. When was the last time you walked into a theater that used overhead fluorescent lights? What kind of feelings would that evoke? Would you really feel like you were there to watch a movie or would it feel more like you were about to sit in on a seminar?
Positioning, color, and intensity all play a role in the ambiance home theater lighting produces. Decide on exactly the feelings you would like to produce with your home theater lighting. What emotions would you like to evoke as people walk into your home theater? Warm? Relaxed? While different colors elicit different emotions from different people, there are some colors that seem to be associated with certain feelings. Choose shades of the color that is associated with the feelings you want to elicit from your home theater audience.
The position and intensity of your home theater lighting will be determined by the placement of the viewing screen. Direct lighting should be avoided during the movie. Using fixtures that reflect light off of walls will help to avoid glare while reducing the harshness of the light. Dimmer switches are also a necessity if your home theater room is not equipped with central lighting control. They will provide you with the ability to customize the intensity of your home theater lighting to your own tastes.

Dedicated Room or Living Room
Now before you come up with the excuse that your living room is your home theater room and other things take place there besides watching movies, just stop. If your home theater room and living room are one and the same, there is even greater incentive for you to address the room’s lighting. Your living room is a multi-purpose room. When your friends come to visit, that is where you congregate. You read your books in your favorite chair, which is in the living room. Your family gets together to play board games or even just to talk in the living room. On top of these and anything else that goes on in your living room, you watch your movies there. How nice would it be if you could adjust the lights to create the perfect reading atmosphere around your favorite chair? Or how would you like to make a very inclusive and personal setting for spending time with loved ones? Even doing something as simple as creating a relaxing, cozy environment after coming home from work can be accomplished by changing the lighting conditions of a room. Proper lighting will provide you with the means to create all of this in your living room.

Convenience
Home theater lighting can easily be tailored in order to take the work out of finding the perfect setting for each light in the room every time you want to watch a movie. A central lighting control allows you to change the intensity of the all lights in a room from a single location. Some of the more sophisticated learning remote controls can actually activate your favorite lighting conditions with the push of a button.

As you can see, lighting is vital to the effectiveness of your home theater system. After being introduced to the possibilities that proper home theater lighting and control provides, it will be hard for you to ignore it any longer. You’ve taken the time, effort, and expense of creating a home theater system for a reason. Finish the job with proper lighting and create a truly enjoyable viewing experience.

God v. Gods

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Aristotle referred to happiness as the most we can achieve. Demons and gods were interchangeable in the time of Homer when people had far less institutionalized manipulation of their thoughts and soulful understandings. What is the ‘anima’ referred to by Aristotle and other sages?

It is easy to be happy without all the things we obsess over. The balance of our constituent selves and the possibility of participation in creating a whole, or in conjunction with that WHOLE is going to be hard to beat for enlightenment. But most people over the last little blip of human existence have bought into systems that deny the whole or any sense of ONENESS. We have seen a 5000 year ‘nightmare’ as James Joyce wisely stated. The thoroughly amazing thing about this - it is those elites who have told us they speak for God or are Divine Kings who in fact have used or led us into this soulful wasteland. We find a similar paradigm exists in scientism which denies the observable outcomes or effects of the soul and ESP.

Barthold Niebuhr (I think it was) said that bringing something back from the past or discovering anything is a high that is akin to the greatest creativity. It is so wonderful to learn and see the way of those we have denigrated as barbarian or primitive; as they frolic in the joy of adventure and oneness with Nature while they nurtured each other.

The Druidic pantheon and Norse system is a great mythos from which one can study and learn good values. The bards told these stories but people understood they were representative of forces and not what one would call Gods. Representative deities could vary in the forms they took, as the elemental forces that the viewer was tapping into were affected by the viewer and vice versa. Jonathan Kirsch’s recent book from 2004 called God against the Gods gets this right.

All people knew resurrection of a sort existed and the soul was immortal. They even loaned money to be repaid after death. By the time you get the Norse system we talk about today you had just another watered down priestly manipulation as I see it. The vascerri (priests) who flunked out of the more demanding Bardic Tradition were becoming more able to meet the needs of the masses who really wanted easy answers and the culture had been decimated or sold out to Christianity in many ways even inside the non-Christian systems. St. Columba is one of the better examples of a Bard who became a saint - the saying at his time was (which is just before the Norse started to exist as we know of them) ‘Jesus is the new Druid’.

Leaders saw the benefit of religion and getting people to accept these easy answers - it worked wonders for Rome - a study of the Synod of Whitby (663-4 AD) shows a murderous king turn to St. Peter in order to grab the assets of the Celtic Christian Church in Northumbria - later England became a force.

Now as to the rituals of Rgnarok and the RgVeda tales - yes there is symbology that accesses these forces still. RG is an old Irish or late Keltic word for King but their kings were a meritocracy and not hereditary. I have a recent research study on their Runes that goes into this in some detail and it is part of my books. These ‘constructs’ or designs that are energized through prayer when properly managed by a good priest-sorcerer can lead to amazing things like the Hexham Heads. These Keltic Heads can not be photographed due to the lattices of archetypal energy that a simple cab driver who made them for his children somehow tapped into. We will address what this ‘tapping-in’ is part of in this book.

People engaged in kissing have a lot of information and energy transfer, although we usually do it for the ‘buzz’ and don’t get into the science or mystique of it. A judgement is made and processed by the Thalami and brain. The Thalami like the Pineal gland are able to amplify all energy inputs and route them to the appropriate place in the brain. Science is now on the verge of seeing what the Third Eye of the ancients knew. To help set the stage for the proper evaluation of information and events that will doubtless fall on many unbelieving minds at times; let me quote Herbert Spencer for you. “There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation.”

From the Mahabharata to the Iliad we see the hand of higher beings who played god with mere mortals wrapped in their egoistic emphasis on the dross physical senses that greedily take so much energy away from soulful pursuits. Just because time appears linear does not make it any truer than the appearance the eyes of an owl recognizes when it sees in dimensions of energy our more limited eyes cannot capture. Perhaps an even more relevant acquisition technology in the animal kingdom has to do with how insects and birds find their way back to a specific territory or ‘home’. Neils Bohr said something like this: - ‘A great truth has an opposite which is also true. A trivial truth has an opposite which is merely false.’

Ninety-five per cent of all the energy in the universe is made up of Dark Energy or Dark Matter. This is a scientific fact recently discovered but not considered in the everyday working world of most academic disciplines. It was always useful to those ‘in the know’ and the Eastern Mystical schools used by Illuminati are part of what we must study in order to understand how Chhi and Shakti can build dimensional constructs.

Strategic Internet Marketing

What is an Internet Marketing Strategy? Strategic Market planning means finding attractive companies and implementing profitable marketing strategies. But what exactly is a marketing strategy?

The Internet is the perfect medium for planning and implementing an effective process for measuring your marketing efforts Return on Investment(ROI). Strategic Internet Marketing is about designing a selling process into your Internet presence that can track and measure your marketing campaigns results. The effect is higher quality leads from the Internet to your Sales department and being able to accurately measure the ROI. Underdog SEO Services will work with your sales and marketing team, and even your customers or partners to develop a strategy that sells your business. A marketing strategy specifies a target market and a related marketing plan. The marketing strategy is the big picture of what a company will do in a market. There are two components to the marketing strategy;Target Market: The target market is mostly a homogenous group of customers to whom a company wishes to appeal.Marketing Mix: Variables under the companies control designed to satisfy the target market. The importance of targeting customers in this process cannot be understated. The target market is surrounded by the marketing mix. The Internet is only one medium that is used in this process. A typical Marketing Mix includes an amount of product, offered at a price, along with some form of promotion to tell customers about the product. These basic marketing concepts must be taken into account when planning any Internet Marketing Strategy. As a fairly new advertising and distribution channel, the web hold tremendous promise. The Internet is slowly replacing traditional media as the primary provider of news and information. The web is also opening new markets and allowing companies to communicate more effectively with their customers. Before you venture into the Internet Marketplace with your product or service, you must ask yourself these basic questions;Should you take your brand online? This depends on what percentage of your consumers shop online. If 50% of your target market is online, this does not necessarily mean that you should spend 50% of your advertising budget online. It depends how much time your target market spends online. There may be more cost effective ways to reach the same group. What is the nature of your product or service?Products that require personal inspection or testing are much harder to sell online. What approach is most appropriate?Should you open an online storefront or be part of an online mall? Maybe you should limit the use of the internet to just advertising and not online purchasing. Maybe you only need an online catalog your consumers can browse through. Expensive products that require a lot of information searching will benefit from and information loaded website. Those marketing packaged goods may only need to invest in web advertising. Is your business purely an online one?For example, Amazon.com has no stores, only fulfillment warehouses. Barnes and Noble have stores as well as an online internet presence.Does your product have a global market? If your target market is global, then you will want to use the Internet to reach overseas customers. Translation issues, foreign regulations, copyright and tax laws and foreign currency exchanges must be addressed. What is the level of competition online? Some markets are going to be more competitive than others. Determine if your budget is going to allow you to run with the competition, or leave you at the bottom of the first 1000.Synchronize your efforts.Ensure your Internet Marketing Plan is in sync with the rest of your traditional marketing plan. How much resource are you going to dedicate to an online marketing campaign? Many companies have made the mistake of offering a feature on their website, and then not fully supporting it. For example, if you have a live support helpdesk to provide instant support, then you better make sure the staff manning it will be able to answer all questions related to the product or service they are supporting. The answers to questions such as these will provide the marketer with a good understanding of whether or not online marketing is a viable option for their company. Proper research will also help identify the risk factors.Remember, a marketer’s job does not end with planning. A good plan by itself does not guarantee success. The plan must be carried out and implemented effectively.

Halloween Party Food Tips and Creative Ideas

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

The Halloween party invitations are pouring in and maybe you’re looking to host a Halloween party of your own! Make the affair complete with scary decorations, an amazing costume, the right music, and of course, Halloween party food! Here are a couple of great ideas and they’ll work whether you need to serve the treats in your home or bring to a party as a host/hostess gift.

Boo-tiful Cupcakes

Pick up a bag of oval-shaped, flat cookies and make the top two-thirds to look like graveyard stones. Write on spooky phrases like “RIP” or “Boo” or even the names of party guests or if that’s too daring, write the names of dead famous people. You can use any cupcakes you come across. Whatever is easiest and fits your budget - store bought, homemade, prepared from a cake mix, etc. After you ice the cupcake, stick the cookies into the cupcakes with the writing and the gravestone portion stick out. Voila, you’re done!

Pizza Faced Pumpkins

Pick up plain, cheese frozen pizzas in any size. You might have to get a bunch depending on the size of the gathering or party. buy pepperoni and cut the slices into triangle shapes to make the jack-o-lantern nose and eyes. Use a bell pepper slice as the mouth. Put everything on the pizza while it’s still frozen. Use the pizza directions to cook it. When you serve it, just use a knife or a pizza cutter to cut it all up but be sure to leave it all together so everyone knows it is a jack-o-lantern pizza.
